April 3 of this year marked the 40th anniversary of the first ever hand held mobile phone call, which was made by Motorola engineer Martin Cooper in 1973.
In front of an excited crowd of reporters and onlookers, a gleeful Cooper chose to make his first call to a key competitor at rival technology firm Bell Labs – Dr Joel S. Engel.
Since that fateful day mobile phones have grown in sophistication and usability to the point where many people are now inseparable from their portable devices.
