Australian universities face growing cyber security threat, says expert

January 22, 2013

Unimutual risk manager Harry Rosenthal has highlighted cyber security threats as one of several key emerging risks which the Australian university sector is likely to face in 2013.

In his latest update, Mr Rosenthal noted that universities need to ensure that they are achieving sufficient levels of vulnerability management in order to mitigate the risk of being impact by a reputation-tarnishing IT failure of security breach.

"Regulations will be strengthening in 2013 to make owners of sensitive data more responsible for care of private information and with the increasing dependence on distance education in Australian higher education, IT systems may be the newest Achilles Heel in the delivery of teaching, learning and research in Australia," said Mr Rosenthal, as reported by Fairfax Media on January 9.

Mr Rosenthal's warning is an important reminder for organisations in the educational sector, as well as other industries, that they are constantly vulnerable to being targeted by cybercriminals, and that being the victim of a security breach can be costly both in a financial sense and reputation-wise as well.

If you are looking for ways to improve security in your organisation, it might be worthwhile considering the value of a security audit evaluation, which can provide a thorough assessment of any potential vulnerabilities that might be putting confidential information at risk.
